Hegemoni Kelas Menengah dalam Novel Langit Kirmizi dan Melati Merah Karya A. Rahim Qahhar: Perspektif Cultural Studies

Abstract


Hegemony and contra-hegemony in cultural studies driven by the actions of created-actors of the author in a process of socio-cultural changes. The profile of created-actors of the author in the middle class have significant influence in the positioning of the upper and lower class. The reality of the created-actors and the one of the historical change represented by the author in the novel LK and MM written by A. Rahim Qahhar. Therefore, this study aims to dismantle and reconstruct the relationship and what the action of the author’s created-actors in the process of sociocultural changes which were made to strengthen the structure of narrative text of the novel, strategic positioning for the middle classes in producing and consuming the discourse of socio-cultural changes in the context of the novel, and the hegemony of the Mid-class in socio-cultural changes which is represented by the author in the text and context of the novel.The analysis were conducted by using the triangulation theory of hegemony, deconstruction and critical discourse analysis. The deconstruction is based on the theory of Jacques Derrida's deconstruction while the hegemony is based on Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony. The third theory in this study is triangulated
in critical paradigm which is applied in a qualitative description and in Critical Discourse Analysis format. In accordance with the text data and the novel context of this study, the middle class acts as an important actor in hegemony, both as coercive and cultural reinforcement. The role of the middle class’s position in the stengthening of ideology, politics, and power Identified significantly upon the relationships of created-actor of Indonesian writer from Medan city in the novel LK and MM by A. Rahim Qahhar produced by Malaysia in the period 1987-1993.
